THE TREE OF LOVE
OR: THE GIRLS EAGER TO GET MARRIED
The girls only have men in their minds,
It is their profit to artful catch them.
Therefore imagine the joy as in one year,
A tree full of men had grown.
Like apples, which can be shaken off,
Thus there they sat and hung and stood.
A noble fruit, my goodness,
Such tree culture was new in the country.
Then there they came all the girls,
Which were anyhow able to stand on their feet,
To shake off men from the seldom tree,
The place could hardly seize the crowd.
But oh, the tree was large and strong,
To shake it did not to help a bit;
To the agony of the girls in the sunshine,
It nearly seemed as if the men hung alone.
The girls tried to say some good words,
So the men would come down from their high place.
In vain they cried, their eyes turning red,
And wished themselves the death.
At last an idea from heaven arrived,
They sawed off the trunk of the tree.
The tree fell together with the apples on it,
Then everyone had a man.
